Mandarin singer killed in crash


KUALA LUMPUR, Sun. - Local Mandarin singer Lee Yee, 28, died in the General Hospital here 17 hours after he was knocked down by a motorcyclist at the 4-1/2 mile Jalan Cheras early today.


The motorcyclist whose identity is still not known, received minor injuries and was given out-patient treatment, while his pillion was admitted for several hours for observation before being dishcarged.


Police said the accident occurred at about 12.15a.m. while Lee was walking to a friend's house to arrange for his performance in Batu Pahat tomorrow.


Lee was rushed to hospital by passers-by with head and facial injuries and other body bruises. He died at 6.45p.m.


Lee, who is as well-known in Chinses entatainment circles as Cahlan Zainuddin is to the Malays, first rost to fame after winning the 1971 Green Network radio singing contest.


Lee, whose real name is Lee Kim Peow, has been exceptionally popular among the Chinses for the last five years.


He is from Penang and an ex-pupil of the Ching Ling High School. Lee was married recently.
